Pipe marking guideline

Everyone who runs a company knows about the European Directive 92/58 EEC "Minimum requirements for safety and/or health signs at the workplace". Specifically, the workplace regulation (ASR) A1.3, which describes, among other things, the pipe marking according to DIN 2403, should be examined more closely here, because if pipelines are not marked or are marked incorrectly and an emergency occurs or maintenance work has to be carried out, this could have serious consequences for the environment and health.

Criteria for the correct labelling of pipeline markings

The most important criteria for the pipeline markings in a company are, apart from uniformity of the markings, that they comply with the legal regulations. For this reason, the pipelines in all companies should be marked with signs according to DIN 2403, as these not only differ in colour depending on the substance flowing through them, but also additionally contain the designation and the specified markings (in some cases also the corresponding hazard symbol) of this substance, as well as indicating its direction of flow by means of an arrow. This pipe marking according to DIN 2403 not only helps to prevent accidents and damage to health, but also contributes effectively to fire fighting. These pipe identification markings and labels should be clearly visible at least every 5 m and not only at the beginning and end of the pipelines. At important points, e.g. every outlet and after every elbow of the pipelines. Edicts and labels, e.g. on vessels and/or fittings, should be clearly visible.
There is only one case where this is permissible if the insulation is fixed and not removable (foamed).
